WPN: Shark Friendly Wedding Photographers

November 29, 2010

A bit over a year ago, I rambled on for three blog posts about being a leisure scuba diver, how watching the film SharkWater shed some light on the cruelty of the shark-finning process, and on how I wanted to affect some change to be involved in Shark-fin friendly wedding banquets.

Well, I’m uber excited to share that all 12 photographers in the Wedding Photographers Network (WPN) have agreed as a group, to offer a credit of S$200 to wedding couples who consciously take sharks’ fin soup off their wedding banquet menus!

To my knowledge, I don’t think any major organisation involved in the wedding industry has ever made a stand for sharks the way we are coming forward to do so. And for a small ‘rag-tag’ team of wedding photographers, if I do say so myself, I think its bloody time and a damn good effort.

If you share my love for marine conservation and would like to find out more about Shark-finning, do check out the Shark Love blog posts.

I hope then this piques your interest on what the guys at WPN and I are offering to encourage Shark-fin friendly dinners. If it does, check out the WPN facebook page for more details about our Shark Friendly offer.

Catching the dawn with Jiansi+Aileen {Wedding}

November 18, 2010

Wedding of Jiansi+Aileen
Getting up before the break of dawn used to be considered a sin in my books. But I very quickly learnt to forgive myself when breathing in the morning air and watching the sky light up with the yolk of the sun became a glory I looked forward to each morning.

And that was what I felt catching the dawn at Jiansi+Aileen’s. A glorious sunrise, a poolside wedding at Goodwood Park Hotel and the company of very real sincere family and friends.

Valerie+Geoffrey {Sentosa Wedding}

October 21, 2010

Wedding of Valerie+Geoffrey

Valerie and Geoffrey’s story is a lovely tale of East meets West – of Durians and Apples, of meeting on the Metro in New York and of amazing dances.

Living in New York, it was only up till the very week of the wedding, did I finally meet Valerie and Geoffrey for the first time. Even with their crazy pre-wedding preparation schedule, the couple took time out to meet up and even do a quick demo of the first dance they had choreographed and spent weeks rehearsing.

Their wedding day, held at the Amara Sanctuary Resort started with a lovely intimate solemnization at the venue’s Glass Pavilion. The couple then surprised guests with a performance by a local lion dance troupe right after their processional.

With guests coming in locally and from abroad, Valerie and Geoffrey pulled up all stops during dinner at Shutters with an amazing first dance, touching speeches and a party to remember!

Darryl. Self-Portrait. October 2010, 4am.

October 09, 2010

A Self Portrait at 4

I’ve been staring long and hard at the monitor for a good half of this day, searching for words that would describe the ‘why, what and how’ I spent the wee hours of this morning making an image of myself, for myself.

Despite having just returned from a shoot at 12 in the morning, I had spent the next 6 hours setting up, tearing down, shooting, re-shooting, contemplating, fussing, feeling elated and dejected over just one photograph. Of myself. And I’ve come to realize, that it is one of the hardest things to do – to head out and seek an image of one’s self that would speak and project the truest form of who we are at that moment. I guess the easiest way to have done this, was to have stretched my arm out with iPhone in hand and hit the ‘lil multi-touchscreen button cam-whore style. But I’m not sure in the wee hours of this morning, if that would have answered the ‘why’ – why am I doing this? I would like to imagine most creatives go through this, or at least I know I go through this – to question and seek purpose in the work they create. Why am I doing this? What does my work speak of? Am I worthy and doing justice with what I am creating? Why, what, how.

But perhaps that is it. In a journey through our lives, in each phase or stage in time, we seek out to find who we are. Not for others to comprehend, but rather a journey inwards in the discovery of ourselves. And because we are in constant movement, in constant evolution and in constant wander/wonder, I’m not sure if a self-portrait of myself today would say the same thing a day, a month, or a year later. But as all journeys go, we take time out to pause, look about and assess one’s self. And at 4 this morning, I guess this was my self-projection.
