Por Por’s 88th

April 14, 2010

Por Por's 88th So we celebrated Grandma’s birthday a few weeks back, where our grand dame threw us all a dinner. Por Por really wanted a celebration and had planned the dinner a few weeks before when she even ‘recced’ the restaurant for a taste test. And it was an evening of laughs, singing and lots of catching up as brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, cousins, and grandkids got together to celebrate Por Por’s 88th.

Por Por's 88th Us grandkids.

Por Por's 88th CRUSH!

Por Por's 88th The Chan Mali Chans, so to speak.

Here’s a post where I learnt how to wrap Nonya Bak Zhang with Por Por. And when we celebrated her 87th last year.

In this episode, Yu Hsin (TinyDot Photography), Jonathan Ho (expressively jOhO), KC Wong (TinyDot Photography) and Wansheng (feldberyl images) take on the road, gravel and water to provide an insight into how sports pushes them to be better photographers.

Scoring karma points at Twestival Singapore ’10

April 02, 2010

twestivalsg-2010_062
When more than a hundred and sixty tweeples turned up at Brewerkz to show their support in raising funds for a cause, you know you’ve been blessed to have been a part of something great.

Last Thursday (25th March) at the microbrewery’s Riverside Point outlet – through only the use of social media via twitter and facebook – a gathering of people who cared about the needs of others, turned up for Twestival or Twitter Festival. Twestival is a 100% volunteer organised event that transpires around the world on the same date and each time for a different cause. This particular Twestival’s focus was on the 72 million children that aren’t provided the opportunity of an education.

In 2010, we turn our focus to education and 72 million children in the world who don’t have the opportunity to go to school. @Concern Worldwide has been selected by the Twestival global team and local organizers to be the recipient because of their comprehensive and well respected approach to education. This is an issue that involves many different elements; hunger, water, teacher training, building of schools, etc. We hope to use the power of our global event fundraising and social media influence as a vehicle to give people insight into this cause on a deeper level.

‘Tweet, Meet and Give Lah!’ was the local chapter’s tagline and give they did. In Singapore at current estimates, US$6,112 was raised for the cause, not including sponsorship figures. Not bad for the Singapore Twestival team that organised the event in a mere 3 weeks. In that short time, the local team managed to pull in support from emcee Joe Augustin (@joeaugustin), local band Jack and Rai (@jackandrai) and singer/composer Deborah Lee as the evening’s entertainment. And just to name a few – Samsung, Lenovo, Crocs and Cisco threw in their support as well. But it didn’t end there though, The Lens Man (@thelensmen) pledged part of their daily sales to the cause. And to top it off Brewerkz (@BrewerkzSG) not only sponsored the venue, but donated 10% of the evening’s revenue to the event.

twestivalsg-2010_080 Everytime I shoot @jackandrai at an event, Jack loves to lean to Rai for the shot. True story.

twestivalsg-2010_195 The smarter emcee @joeaugustin says I’m…

I jumped at the chance when (@blackawfee) a good mate of mine, asked if I would sponsor my time as a photographer. How could I say ‘No’ to her when I’ve photographed a bunch of her friends’ weddings, all thanks to her? ;-)

And I’m glad to say I was part of the evening’s activities, it was fun to have met the many fellow tweeples for real that evening. But ‘met for fun’ wouldn’t be right to say, to have ‘met up for a good cause and then partied some!’ now that is so much more worthwhile.

Of beer, peanuts and blog posts

April 01, 2010

Koh Samui
So it’s 2am, I’ve just finished editing a set of photographs and I’m chillin with a bottle of Hoegaarden and some black peanuts leftover from Chinese New Year. Though a little too late to think about New Year resolutions and plans (OMG, where did the first quarter of 2010 go?), I’m feeling a little contemplative about work, life and love in the last 365 days or so.

The end of year wedding season for 2009 was crazy. I had shoots every weekend from September till January ’10, but the volume of editing work really didn’t start clearing up till mid-March. This left me a little lost because I felt I hadn’t had time. Time to think, time to contemplate, time to muse and time to myself. It was only during late night runs around the neighborhood at 2 in the morning, did I find some time to be with myself.

Now that is not to say I never had time to sit back and enjoy life. In January and February this year, I flew to Koh Samui and Phuket for work. In between sets and takes, I managed to squeeze in time to stop, stare and be in awe of blue skies, gorgeous sunsets and bright starry skies. I thank the stars and the countless blessings for the opportunity to have traveled.

And as I look back on all thats been achieved, all that has happened and ahead at all that is about to transpire, I find that the balance between doing what I love and loving what I do, has never been more important than ever. I think about all the great moments I was blessed to have witnessed but I also stand shell shocked at the mountain of work that proceeds.

So I remind myself, to take time out to read, to travel, to run and to escape into my own little worlds. Well, at least with some beer and peanuts.

Brand spankin’ new branding-ology and blogaroo

March 17, 2010

So, things around here have changed and I thank you if you’ve noticed. There’s a new brand name, logo, a cool typeface, a bright splash of yell-range (that’s yellow+orange) and a whole new blog design. All of which have been slowly appearing stealthily lika-ninja over the course of the last 6 months or so.

It was during Reservist In-Camp training of all times, that I had looked at the way everything related to the work I was producing and the direction of where photography was taking me and realised ‘Hey, you’ve got a really confusing brand there’. So off I went to speak to some elves and pixies, they sprinkled some fairy dust and voila!

A whole bunch of thank yous goes out to all the cool dudes and dudettes who’ve helped me with the process – from the little focus group who polled and gave their feedback about the various designs, to the guys behind the scenes making it all work.

And so its official, here’s the brand spanking old me, in the form of Dazza Pictures.

Keep rockin \m/

Wedding of Iris+Waxus

March 15, 2010

Eleven flights of stairs, 8 bridesmaids (with equally numbered groomsmen) and travelling from one end of Singapore to the other, were no match for the crazy cool wedding Iris and Waxus had. The constantly perky fun love birds made shooting their wedding a breeze and the brilliant solemnization outdoors at Rasa Sentosa Resort, Shangri La melted my face (metaphorically, not physically).

Iris and Waxus weren’t the only two love birds that evening.

Heaps more pictures of the entire day are up on the facebook page. Pop by, check ‘em out and be a fan (shameless plug).
