Wynne-ness Part 1

March 12, 2009

There seems to have been a focus on the local (Singapore) music scene recently – with the local free-to-air TV station plugging indie rock-ish bands and the spotlight in the papers on ‘live’ bands at clubs, pubs and bars. I thought it appropriate to plug an old buddy of mine – Wynne Sandosham from Soul Circle.

Wynne and I met each other eons ago as teenagers at a particular catholic church in Siglap. Back then, we belonged to a clique that grew close through church camps, chalets, barbecues and various parties. There’s sure to be a whole lot more of a back story – from dance parties, to talentime contests, to underage alcohol binge-ing – but I guess I shall cut out all the self-indulgent nostalgia, except one…or two.

So with all good coming of age stories, friends drift apart, live different lives and loose contact. Eventually, Wynne went off to London, performing at various musical venues and me, well you know the story. Not until, Facebook – where everyone from the old clique started finding and adding each others’ contacts. Which was when Wynne told me he was coming back to Singapore. And over a pint at Wala Wala, after a set with EIC, we reminisced the years of out teenage adolescences. So, through the magic of Facebook we maintained contact (some) and which was also where I learnt Wynne – a non-native mandarin speaking bloke – was going to be performing on stage in Mandarin with Wakin/Emil Chau. Wow. (Review here)

That one performance is a bigger compliment than I can ever give Wynne on this tiny blog.

A digression:
Well, this wouldn’t be right without one more trip down memory lane – Wynne and I used to ‘open step’, the phrase coined to mean – to performed co-ordinated dance steps / routines – at church and house parties. And the two songs, we ever knew how to dance to were – Sadness Part 1 by Enigma (no doubt, dubbed an ‘unholy song’ in those days) and Set Adrift on Memory Bliss by PM Dawn, simply because the beats and bars to the songs where the same. Well I’m glad dancing got us nowhere and that Wynne’s musical talents made sane.

Anyway, why take Wakin/Emil Chau’s or this blog’s word when you can watch, listen, hear for yourself? Wynne performs at EZ50, 50′s, Illido and Vie Bar.
